Ladakh feels nothing like the India most travellers imagine. Tibetan culture dominates here, and its deeply Buddhist population lives among barren mountains and vast high-altitude plateaus. Whitewashed stupas dot the landscape, colourful prayer flags flutter in the mountain wind, and centuries-old gompas stand proudly on rocky hilltops overlooking the valleys. It is a landscape that is at once harsh, tranquil and utterly captivating. We have plenty of plans. At the top of the list is the Nubra Valley, a place I was forced to skip twenty years ago because of permit problems. This time, I finally hope to make it there.
