Arrival in Leh, Ladakh
We couldn't leave the terminal upon arrival in Delhi because there was a drumming demonstration. There were more photographers than protesters, but plenty of noise. The friendly police officer assured us the demonstrations would only last five minutes, yet he still granted us safe passage to the other terminal. Flight to Leh. A long wait, a packed plane, and the sun shining brightly above the clouds. Views of the mighty Himalayas were limited, but once we broke through the cloud cover, Ladakh revealed itself in all its arid, wild beauty. The weather app had predicted rain and cold, but it turned out to be scorching hot and sunny. It was delightful chaos, yet there was a sign outside bearing our names from the guesthouse. Rock Castle Residency—a mouthful of a name, but a place full of hospitality. A lovely spot to spend the first few days acclimatizing; an altitude of just under 4,000 meters requires adjustment. After a sleepless night, I didn't manage much more than a short walk through Leh. It is a city that has clearly exploded in size over the last 22 years—a boomtown at high altitude. There aren't many quaint, charming little shops left; instead, there are trendy cafés and a great many small businesses—Indian small businesses, fortunately. It’s great for me to be back. I’ll spare you the details of the bureaucratic process involved in getting an Airtel SIM card; it took almost as long as the journey here
Arrival in Leh, Ladakh
