Gorge(ous)
Gorge(ous) it was in the Taroko Gorge, a narrow canyon on the east coast. Very early it was still very quiet and I could just stop in the middle of the road to take pictures. However, all my planned walks ended in failure. Either because of a missing permit or because of falling rocks that blocked the paths. One I was able to walk halfway, but then a red ribbon also blocked this trail. Too bad that old road from my 'youth' had almost completely disappeared and it had turned into a tunnel parade again. Much safer but less romantic. In a few places you could still walk small pieces. The sun was shining brightly in the gorge, but back on the coast it was overcast again. In Hualien I had to go from the Lonely Planet to the Tsu Chi temple. A monstrous building where all the good work of the Buddhist nun Cheng Yen is shown in an exhibition. It was so much and really covered all the problems known to humanity that she helps solving and has a solution for that it almost became uncomfortable. She is active on all continents and helps with hunger, wars, disasters, the environment, diseases and other inconveniences. Difficult to really understand. You had to go through almost 100 rooms to get everything into your mind. Fortunately, she believes that anyone can become enlightened if you just put in the effort.
Gorge(ous)
Gorge(ous) was het in de Taroko Gorge, een nauwe kloof aan de oostkust. Heel vroeg was het nog heel rustig en ik kon gewoon midden op de weg stoppen om foto’s te maken. Al mijn geplande wandelingen werden echter een mislukking. Ofwel door een ontbrekend permit ofwel door vallende rotsen die de paden blokkeerden. Eentje heb ik tot halverwege kunnen lopen maar toen blokkeerde een rood lint ook deze trail. Jammer dat die oude weg uit mijn ‘jeugd’ vrijwel geheel verdwenen was en het toch weer in een tunnel parade veranderd was. Veel veiliger maar minder romantisch. Op een paar plekken kon je nog kleine stukjes belopen. De zon scheen volop in de kloof maar terug aan de kust was het weer zwaar bewolkt. In Hualien moest ik van de Lonely Planet persé naar de Tsu Chi tempel. Een monstrueus gebouw waar in een expositie al het goede werk van de Boeddhistische non Cheng Yen getoond wordt. Het was zoveel en besloeg werkelijk alle problemen die de mensheid kent waar zij bij helpt en een oplossing voor heeft dat het bijna ongemakkelijk werd. Ze is op alle werelddelen actief en helpt bij oorlogen, honger, rampen, milieu, ziektes en andere ongemakken. Niet te bevatten. Je moest er wel bijna 100 zalen voor doorlopen om alles mee te krijgen. Gelukkig vindt ze dat iedereen verlicht kan worden als je je best maar doet.
